•Repowering of existing plants increases green energy production without additional land use

Milan, March 13, 2025 – A2A and ContourGlobal have signed a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), enabling the Italian utility to supply new renewable energy to its retail customers. The agreement is supported by ContourGlobal’s Solar PV modernization program, which will increase annual production of the Italian assets by over 43% without requiring additional land use.

The PPA covers 75% of the additional capacity generated through repowering activities, amounting to 22 GWh per year, backed by Guarantees of Origin. Structured in multiple phases, the first energy deliveries are expected between May 2025 and June 2026, in line with the completion of asset upgrades. The deal is part of a broader partnership, under which A2A will purchase energy from a ContourGlobal solar portfolio consisting of 19 plants, generating a total of 85 GWh per year.

At a time when the energy market is marked by uncertainty, agreements like the one with ContourGlobal can help stabilize commodity costs and support the growth of renewables,” commented Lorenzo Spadoni, Head of Generation & Trading at A2A. “This PPA is another step in A2A’s partnership strategy to provide its customers with solutions that drive the country’s decarbonization process”, he added.

Paola Agrati, Country Manager Italy at ContourGlobal, noted: “This ten-year PPA allows us to ensure a stable and competitive supply of renewable energy, reinforcing our commitment to decarbonization and climate change mitigation. Our revamping and repowering project modernizes existing infrastructure, enhancing production capacity through the most advanced available technologies. This approach boosts efficiency without requiring new land, minimizing environmental impact.”

For A2A, Italy’s second-largest operator by installed capacity and distributed electricity, this agreement aligns with its Strategic Plan to 2035, which allocates €22 billion for projects that support the country’s ecological transition, increase renewable energy availability, and reduce reliance on foreign energy sources.

ContourGlobal operates 71 solar plants across 14 Italian regions with an ambitious technology upgrade plan. Nearly half of these plants (35) are undergoing an advanced revamping and repowering project, which will add 18 MWp, bringing the total installed capacity to 113 MWp upon completion. By 2026, this upgrade will enable the company to generate approximately 170 GWh/year of clean energy, strengthening its position as a renewable Independent Power Producer (IPP) in the Italian market.

Another key feature of the initiative is its circular economy approach: materials from decommissioned solar panels are recovered at a 97% recycling rate, including copper, silver, aluminum, glass, and crystalline silicon. Additionally, steel structures and upgraded inverters are reused, further highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainability.
