A new energy equation: the AI–Power Nexus

Artificial intelligence is redrawing the global energy map. Data center electricity consumption grew more than 50% in just three years (+161 TWh), reaching an estimated 485 TWh in 2025 and set to exceed 560 TWh in 2026.

While overall global electricity demand rose +3% in 2025, data center demand surged +17% year-on-year, and in the U.S. alone +23%, making it the single strongest driver of domestic electricity growth.

Even as systems become more efficient, the sheer scale of AI adoption keeps pushing power needs upward. Global data center installed capacity is projected to grow from today’s levels to around 195 GW by 2030.

Furthermore, the data center landscape is not only expanding – it is diversifying. Facilities now range from 5–10 MW to new 300–500 MW AI factories, and next-generation 1–5 GW megacampuses. With inference expected to reach roughly two-thirds of AI power consumption in 2026, flexibility of supply becomes as critical as capacity itself. At the same time, developers face constrained grids, curtailed capacity and rising public scrutiny.

ContourGlobal is an experienced independent power producer able to become a strategic partner to Data centers that need timely, reliable and affordable energy solutions and an with ready-to-go opportunities.

ContourGlobal CEO confirms 800 MW UK pipeline after 2 GWh BESS deal - Energy Storage

June 29th, 2026 – Speaking to ESS News by PV Magazine on the sidelines of Intersolar in Munich, ContourGlobal CEO Antonio Cammisecra provided further detail on the company’s UK strategy following its entry into the market through the acquisition of the Wallace battery storage project in Scotland. He revealed that ContourGlobal’s development pipeline across the UK for solar, storage and wind projects already stands at 800 MW, describing the country’s “sophisticated market” as one that could become the company’s second or third largest globally. Cammisecra noted that he has advocated for a stronger UK focus since taking the helm of the KKR-backed business two years ago, and confirmed that a dedicated local team has been established, alongside close relationships with local developers. He placed the Wallace project within ContourGlobal’s broader international storage strategy, drawing a parallel with the company’s hybrid solar-and-storage assets in Chile (200 MW/1.3 GWh, already commissioned) and Arizona (360 MW/1.4 GWh, soon to enter construction), and pointed to the UK’s Balancing Mechanism as a key revenue driver for the Wallace site going forward.

PV MAGAZINE - ContourGlobal: Bills Decree risks penalizing batteries, especially on the Capacity Marketside

March 9th, 2026 – In an interview with pv magazine Italia, ContourGlobal’s CEO Antonio Cammisecra shared the company’s perspective on Italy’s Bills Decree, highlighting both its short-term intent and its structural limitations. He noted that while the decree addresses immediate issues such as ETS costs and price formation, it does not tackle the underlying drivers of high energy prices, namely the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and exposure to volatile gas markets. Cammisecra emphasized that accelerating the deployment of renewable energy and battery storage systems remains the most effective and sustainable way to reduce costs and strengthen energy independence. He also warned that certain provisions risk undermining investor confidence and slowing down new capacity development, particularly in the storage segment, where the current Capacity Market design could disadvantage batteries compared to gas-fired generation. The CEO further underlined the importance of enabling long-term planning for renewable and storage auctions, as well as promoting market-based instruments such as PPAs, especially for SMEs, to ensure price stability and project bankability. More broadly, Cammisecra reaffirmed the need for a stable and coherent regulatory framework capable of unlocking private investment and supporting a faster, more resilient energy transition in Italy.

CLEANING UP PODCAST - Renewables Are Here To Stay. Get Over It.

June 4th, 2025 – In Cleaning Up, a podcast hosted by Michael Liebreich — founder of Bloomberg New Energy Finance — Antonio Cammisecra shared ContourGlobal’s strategic evolution.
He spoke about the company’s coal exit (e.g. Sochagota plant divestment in Colombia), the transformation of Bulgarian assets with solar and battery storage, and investment in hydrogen technologies.
Cammisecra defended renewables against criticism following blackouts, arguing that grid reliability hinges on regulation and system architecture.
He raised concerns about AI-driven electricity demand, advocating for a smarter, more decentralized grid.
Antonio joined Michael to explore how to build resilience and security in renewable-heavy grids, how ContourGlobal’s battery systems deliver solar at night, and why grids worldwide are struggling under growing demand.
