Power Plants in Austria

Austria

In 2014 and 2015 ContourGlobal acquired seven wind farms from Raiffeisen Wien/NÖ. At the time of acquisition, the plants in Austria had a capacity of 150 MW and an average annual production of 240 GWh. Following the repowering of 4 out of the 7 wind farms by ContourGlobal. The installed capacity increased slightly to 161.7 MW with a reduced number of turbines from 70 to 57. Today ContourGlobal’s production almost doubled with these 7 wind parks to an annual average of around 400 GWh which can serve around 140,000 households in Austria with green energy and avoids around 240,000 tons of CO2 emissions. With its current portfolio ContourGlobal ranks among the top 10 domestic wind production companies.
Wind turbines are the most visible signs for renewable energy projects. The ambitious Austrian 2030 Climate Goals and the green energy regulation with CfD schemes makes windpower attractive and competitive in the near future. The potential for further project development for wind power but also solar and battery is promising.
Especially the practice of repowering existing wind farms will play a crucial role in our near future activities. To speed up the process not only for ContourGlobal but also for the Energy Transition goals in Austria the relevant permitting processes need to be eased by the federal and provincial governments in Austria. Existing permitted turbines will be replaced – at the same location – with less but more efficient turbines. Reasons that the authorities should put these permitting on a fast track.
