ContourGlobal, a leading international independent power producer with rapid growth on renewables and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), has signed an agreement with CATL, the world’s leading battery technology company, for the supply of 3 GWh of storage systems for projects located in UK, Greece and Chile. This marks the first bundle agreement between the two companies, providing flexibility to align supply with the evolution of its development pipeline.

The technology at the core of the agreement is a containerized liquid-cooling integrated BESS solution built around CATL’s large-format lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The bundle covers a total of 526 containers each rated at 5.64 MWh, all configured for four hours of continuous discharge.

CATL’s technology will support the long-term performance and value of ContourGlobal’s projects through a proprietary cell-degradation management system that continuously monitors and mitigates the aging of each cell. The batteries are designed to operate reliably throughout the life of the projects, with CATL also committing to take back and recycle the units at the end of their useful life, in line with the European regulatory requirements on battery sustainability and circular economy principles.

This marks the first deployment of this technology within ContourGlobal’s portfolio and brings to its fleet a set of design features including integrated liquid-cooling architecture and built-in fire detection and suppression architecture, which ensure stable operation across a wide range of temperatures, mitigate thermal propagation, and uphold compliance with the highest applicable industry safety and certification standards.

In addition, ContourGlobal’s projects using CATL technology will be equipped to support future grid stability services, including grid-forming functionality where required by system operators. Although grid-forming services are not yet fully recognized or remunerated under most current regulatory frameworks, the technology is already designed to enable them as markets evolve.

ContourGlobal’s BESS strategy

Today the company has 3 GWh of operating BESS projects across Europe and the Americas, including in Bulgaria, a 202 MW/ 500 MWh stand-alone BESS, one of the largest in Eastern Europe and in Chile, where the company is operating 2.5 GWh of BESS across the hybrid projects Victor Jara and Quillagua, located in the Atacama Desert regions of Tarapacá and Antofagasta.

The supply agreement between ContourGlobal and CATL covers three recently announced projects that will expand the company’s storage footprint across Europe and Latin America. The recently acquired 500 MW / 2,000 MWh Wallace stand-alone BESS project in Scotland, marking the company’s entry into the UK market; the 100 MW/ 400 MWh Taxiarches facility in Greece; and Los Maitenes in Chile, a hybrid project combining 131 MWp PV coupled with 90 MW/ 360 MWh of battery storage. The projects in Chile and Greece are already under construction, while the Scotland project is in advanced development.

Furthermore, the company has acquired a 1.6 GW BESS portfolio under development in Italy, which falls outside the scope of this supply agreement.
