Lomé, October 2nd, 2025 – ContourGlobal celebrates 15 years of operations in Togo, marking a decade and a half of delivering reliable power, strengthening energy independence of the country, and investing in the well-being of local communities. The celebrations reflected the dual pillars of the company’s presence in Togo. From one side, the operational achievements and the strategic importance of the 100 MW ContourGlobal Togo power plant, operated and maintained by more than 100 engineers, technicians and support staff. On the other, the company highlighted the community impact with the inauguration of six new fully-equipped classrooms at the Adamavo High School, just two kilometers from the plant. This initiative is part of ContourGlobal’s long-standing commitment to local development, with more than 1.3 million USD (780 million CFA) invested in social projects in Togo over the past 15 years.

15 years of Powering Togo

The company underlined ContourGlobal’s important contributions in Togo.  As highlighted by U.S. Embassy Lomé Chargé d’Affaires Richard C. Michaels, “We are incredibly proud of ContourGlobal doubling Togo’s power generation capacity since 2010, showcasing American excellence. Valued at more than $200 million, ContourGlobal’s thermal power plant in Lome is Togo’s biggest and represents the largest U.S. investment in the country.

Carlo Zorzoli, CEO of Europe & Africa for ContourGlobal, highlighted that “ContourGlobal has been the first international private investor building a power plant in Togo with the support of multilateral financing. This facility  has reliably generated the power requested by the Togolese grid over the last 15 years; it currently represents about 40% of the country’s installed capacity and supplies ~35% of Togo’s electricity demand on a yearly basis. It was designed to operate with natural gas and liquid fuels — ensuring flexibility in different supply scenarios, but more than 70% of the generation since 2018 was from natural gas, significantly reducing CO emissions”.

The plant led by Koete Agbélénko Nikouegan, is operated and maintained by Togolese engineers technicians, and support staff – with 64 direct employees and about 40 indirect jobs – consistently achieving availability levels comparable to the best-performing power plants worldwide. In fact, ContourGlobal plant in Lomé has contributed over 5.8 TWh to the national grid since start of operations, playing a critical role in energy security and representing ~60% of the country’s domestic electricity generation over the last five years. Moreover, every year, dozens of students from across Togo and the region join structured internships, gaining hands-on experience in plant operations, safety, and advanced technologies such as high-voltage systems and industrial automation. These programs support Togo’s industrialization and energy policy goals, while preparing the next generation of energy professionals.

15 years of Investing in Education: Six New Classrooms for Adamavo High School

The celebrations also focused on community impact with the inauguration of a new education project in Adamavo, just two kilometers from the plant. On October 1st, ContourGlobal handed over six new fully equipped classrooms — built at a cost of USD 85,000 (51 million CFA) — expanding the local High School’s capacity with lighting, fans, and 230 desks. This investment is part of a broader, 15-year partnership with local education authorities. Since 2010, the company has committed USD 260,000 (150 million CFA) to the Adamavo’s High School infrastructure, benefiting more than 30,000 students.

Attending the event, Mrs. Djani Epouse Afantchao, Regional Director of Education Grand Lomé, praised ContourGlobal’s contribution to strengthening the education system locally.

Our approach to sustainability goes beyond producing power,” said Carlo Zorzoli, CEO of Europe & Africa for ContourGlobal. “I’m proud that our 15 years of operations in Togo are also 15 years of supporting younger generations, with more than 30,000 students benefitting from our support to Adamavo High School.

15 years of positive impact and local partnerships

Over the past 15 years, ContourGlobal has invested more than USD 1.3 million (780 million CFA) in local development projects. These include building and renovating schools in Adamavo but also in  Kagnikopé, and donating supplies to support education; renovating the Kanyikope Health Center and constructing medical shelters in partnership with the U.S. Embassy, improving rural roads and markets to strengthen local economies; and installing solar systems and wells to provide clean water and renewable energy in rural areas.
