ContourGlobal has strengthened its commitment to environmental stewardship by becoming the first private Independent Power Producer (IPP) to join the prestigious Proteus Partnership for Biodiversity and Nature. This milestone highlights the company’s dedication to global biodiversity goals, while reducing our project and operational biodiversity and nature-related risks and reinforcing our broader sustainable transition strategy into renewables. Our renewed commitment to sustainable and responsible power generation was recently recognized with a highly positive external evaluation by Sustainable Fitch, issued in support of ContourGlobal’s highly successful Green Bond financing.

For over 20 years, the Proteus Partnership has provided member companies with access to critical biodiversity data, tools, and training, enabling them to align business decisions with global environmental frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). And, as we aim to increase the percentage of renewable energy in our portfolio, it will become increasingly important for us to effectively identify and manage potential impacts, such as forest clearing, soil erosion / degradation, noise pollution, disturbance / loss of wildlife, air and/or water pollution, and impairment of scenic vistas.

Proteus empowers everyone at ContourGlobal to place biodiversity at the heart of our decision-making—whether in M&A activities, business development due diligence, or project construction and operations. It’s not just good business; it’s our responsibility. This collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) underscores our commitment to science-based strategic decisions, leveraging cutting-edge data and expertise,” said Linda Wrong, Global Head of Sustainability at ContourGlobal.

As part of the partnership, ContourGlobal will have global and unlimited access to the latest and most comprehensive suite of scientific tools and resources, including the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT), which offers global data on protected areas, sensitive biodiversity zones, and threatened species. Additionally, the company will benefit from technical briefings, policy updates, and webinars hosted on the Proteus platform, enhancing knowledge-sharing and industry best practices. These resources will support integration of critical data into informed decision-making throughout the lifecycle of ContourGlobal’s projects, from project screenings and selection, Environmental & Social Impact Assessments for new and current operations, and decommissioning efforts.

With this strategic step, ContourGlobal further cements its leadership in sustainable energy development, demonstrating how business and biodiversity can go hand in hand to create lasting positive environmental impact.
