Power Plants in Togo
Togo

Togo is generating its own power with a 100 MW plant using natural gas or heavy fuel oil as main fuel and diesel as backup.
In a high-growth region like Sub-Saharan Africa, energy is critical to building a stable local economy. For many years, Togo had one of the region’s smallest electricity supplies (85 MW) and relied heavily on imports from Ghana and Nigeria. However, with the commissioning of the ContourGlobal Togo 100 MW tri-fuel power plant in 2010, the country significantly strengthened its energy independence.
Today, the 100 MW tri-fuel power plant plays a vital role in Togo’s energy mix, with natural gas as its primary fuel, supplemented by heavy fuel oil (HFO) and diesel as a backup. Over the past decade, approximately 70% of our generation has been powered by natural gas, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions compared to HFO. This flexible fuel strategy not only ensures cleaner and more sustainable operations but also guarantees energy security by allowing seamless transitions in the event of supply disruptions.Recognizing the project’s impact, Project Finance awarded ContourGlobal Togo the “Private Power Plant Deal of the Year” in 2009, highlighting its role in increasing the country’s generation capacity by over 200%.
Now in 2025, the plant has been in operation for 15 years, maintaining a remarkable availability of over 97%. It remains a cornerstone of Togo’s power sector, representing 40% of the country’s installed capacity.
Togo Power Plant of ISO 14001 certification
ContourGlobal Togo, committed to managing and controlling its environmental impact and occupational health & safety risks, implemented ISO 14001 with Bureau Veritas and achieved certification on May 2nd, 2017. Building on this commitment, we further strengthened our management systems and were certified for ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 by AFNOR on December 4th, 2024.
