15 years of operations in Togo

ContourGlobal has been present in Togo since 2010, when we commissioned the Lomé Power Plant, a 100 MW tri-fuel facility that more than doubled the country’s generation capacity and marked the largest U.S. investment ever made in Togo. At that time, the nation had only 85 MW of installed capacity and relied heavily on electricity imports from Ghana and Nigeria.

Today, the plant supplies about 35% of Togo’s electricity and represents 40% of the country’s total installed capacity. Since operations began, it has generated more than 5.8 TWh of electricity, becoming a pillar of energy security and independence, representing ~60% of the country’s domestic electricity generation over the last five years.

In 2025, ContourGlobal celebrates 15 years of activity in Togo, highlighting the plant’s strategic role in supporting the country’s growth and its transition toward a more stable and sustainable energy future.

Boosting Togo’s generation capacity

Commissioned 15 years ago through a $200 million USD investment (111 billion CFA), the Lomé power plant transformed Togo’s energy landscape. At the time of its launch, the country had one of the smallest electricity supplies in the region, with just 85 MW of installed capacity and a heavy reliance on imports from Ghana and Nigeria.

The commissioning of ContourGlobal Togo’s 100 MW tri-fuel plant in 2010 more than doubled the nation’s generation capacity, marking the largest U.S. investment ever made in Togo and setting the foundation for greater energy independence.

The facility runs mainly on natural gas, with HFO and diesel as backup. Since 2018, over 70% of its generation has come from natural gas, cutting CO₂ emissions. Its role in boosting Togo’s generation capacity by over 200% was recognized with the 2009 Project Finance award for “Private Power Plant Deal of the Year.”

The Lomé facility is fully operated and maintained by Togolese engineers and technicians, employing 64 direct staff and supporting around 40 indirect jobs.

15 Years of Powering Togo and Local Communities

At ContourGlobal, our commitment in these fifteen years powering Togo is more than energy — it is a long-term investment in people, education, and community development. Since 2010, over $1.3 million USD (780 million CFA) have been dedicated to local projects: building and renovating schools in Adamavo and Kagnikopé, supporting healthcare facilities such as the Kanyikope Health Center, improving rural roads and markets, and installing solar systems and wells to provide clean water and renewable energy.

This ongoing engagement reached a new milestone on October 1, with the inauguration of six fully equipped classrooms at Adamavo High School, just two kilometers from the Lomé plant. The $85,000 USD (51 million CFA) expansion delivered improved lighting and ventilation systems, 230 new desks, and expanded capacity to accommodate the community’s growing student population.

More than a school project, these celebrations marked 15 years of reliable energy supply and shared progress — with over 30,000 students having already benefited from ContourGlobal’s educational initiatives, scholarships, and material support. A testament to the company’s role as a trusted partner in Togo’s economic and social development.
