Power Plants in Italy

In Italy, we operate 71 solar PV plants across 14 regions, with a total installed capacity of 106 MWdc, set to reach 190 MWdc by 2027 through a combination of new projects, repowering, and revamping initiatives. All plants are connected to the Italian National Grid and benefit from long-term Contracts for Difference (CfDs) or fixed feed-in tariffs, ensuring reliable power delivery and stable cash flows.

Our Italian solar sites, which began operations between 2007 and 2013, laid the foundation for a legacy of sustainability and operational excellence. Over the years, we have steadily implemented our roll-up strategy, acquiring new assets and leveraging the expertise of our teams. This strategy has also enabled strategic partnerships, including with our minority shareholder Energy Infrastructure Partners, which owns 49% of the Italian fleet.

In 2025, ContourGlobal secured 3 new solar PV projects in Sicily, totaling approximately 80 MWdc, through the FerX and NZIA tenders, expected to commence operations in 2027 and using European-origin components, reinforcing the local industrial ecosystem and contributing to a more resilient renewable supply chain.

At the same time, we have continued our program of repowering and revamping existing assets, with 35 plants upgraded for a total of 42 MWdc and a performance increase of more than 33%. Once the second phase of these activities is completed, the Italian portfolio will reach approximately 113 MWdc by mid-2026. Fully operational, the upgraded and new plants will generate 174 GWh per year, representing a more than 40% increase in production compared to their original capacity.

Combined with the new tendered projects, the total installed capacity in Italy is expected to exceed 190 MWdc by 2027.

ContourGlobal’s Italian strategy combines next-generation solar PV deployment with battery energy storage systems (BESS), with the first Italian BESS projects planned to start construction in 2026. This effort is supported by a 1.9 GW battery storage project portfolio, built through strategic acquisitions from leading industry players over the course of the year.

Repowering & Revamping of Solar Plants
What is solar plant revamping?

Revamping is the process of upgrading existing solar power plants by replacing outdated components — such as modules, inverters, structures, monitoring systems, and wiring — with newer, more efficient technology. The physical footprint of the plant stays the same or oftenly can even be reduced, while energy output and efficiency improve significantly.

What is solar plant repowering?

When upgrading the technology frees up space within the existing site boundary, that space can be used to install additional capacity — increasing generation without occupying any new land.

What is the difference between revamping and repowering?

Revamping refers to upgrading the existing plant with a more efficient technology while maintaining the same power plant capacity. Repowering on the other hand involves also increasing the overall power plant capacity leveraging when new spaces frees in the existing site boundary and the existing interconnection allows it. The result is more power from the same land.

Why does this matter for the environment?

Land use is one of the key sustainability considerations in renewable energy. By maximizing the output of existing sites rather than developing new ones, repowering and revamping protect natural habitats and agricultural land, reduce the ecological impact of energy infrastructure, and deliver more clean power per square meter.

What has ContourGlobal done in Italy?

ContourGlobal operates 71 utility-scale photovoltaic assets in Italy. As of 2025, 35 of these plants have undergone repowering and revamping activities. A second phase covering 6 additional projects is underway, with completion expected by mid-2026. Once fully operational, the upgraded portfolio will reach approximately 113 MWdc of installed capacity and generate around 174 GWh per year — a more than 40% increase in production compared to the original capacity of these plants, with zero additional land use.

Does ContourGlobal apply this approach in other countries?

Yes. Repowering initiatives have been carried out in Austria, reflecting ContourGlobal’s broader commitment to optimizing its renewable portfolio across Europe without expanding its environmental footprint.

How does this connect to ContourGlobal's sustainability strategy?

The project features numerous relevant improvements on the sustainability dimensions. The discarded modules, for example, are subject to an end-of-life processing that allows to recover 97% of the materials which includes copper, silver, aluminum, glass and crystalline silicon. The old ground mounted steel structures being replaced by new single-axis trackers, as well as the old inverters being upgraded, are also subject to similar processes highlighting the importance of circular approaches.

Our Head of Italy

Paola Agrati

Paola joined ContourGlobal in March 2016 and currently serves as the CEO for the Italian business, where she spearheads the operation of our existing renewable energy assets and drives the expansion of our business in the renewable sector, emphasizing the crucial energy transition. Previously, Paola held other key leadership roles within the company, serving as Group Deputy General Counsel and Renewable General Counsel, where she played a significant role in shaping our renewable energy strategy. Before joining ContourGlobal, Paola was part of the energy and project finance team at Latham & Watkins in New York from 2008 to 2016, and prior to that, she worked at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Italy and New York. Paola is admitted to the bar in New York and Italy. She graduated from the University of Padua and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University.
