Powering the Region with Reliable and Sustainable Energy Solutions.

ContourGlobal plays a key role in advancing energy access and reliability across Africa, operating 3 thermal power plants with a combined capacity of 212 MW. Our presence spans Rwanda, Senegal, and Togo—each project tailored to meet local energy needs through innovative and sustainable solutions.

In Rwanda, the KivuWatt plant taps into Lake Kivu’s unique biogas resources to deliver 26 MW of clean power. In Senegal and Togo, our Cap des Biches and Togo plants provide 86 MW and 100 MW respectively, using efficient natural gas technologies to support national energy grids and foster economic growth.

Our presence extends to Nigeria where we operate with cogeneration plants.

Through long-term investment and a commitment to operational excellence, ContourGlobal is contributing to the continent’s energy resilience and sustainable development.

Rwanda

For decades, Rwanda’s Lake Kivu, with its high concentration of methane and carbon dioxide, was seen as a risk due to its potential for toxic release. Today, our team is focused on extracting methane from the lake to generate electricity that will expand household access to power, lower costs, and reduce environmental hazards.

Senegal

Cap des Biches is an 86 MW thermal generation facility developed and constructed by ContourGlobal in two phases—53 MW that began generating electricity in April 2016 after only 14 months of construction, and a second phase consisting of 33 MW that broke ground in January 2016 and produced first electricity already in September 2016.

Togo

In a high-growth region like Sub-Saharan Africa, energy is critical to building a stable local economy. In recent years, Togo has had one of the region’s smallest electricity supplies (85 MW) and has had to import nearly 90% of its energy from Ghana & Nigeria. Today, the country is generating its own power with a 100 MW plant using natural gas or heavy fuel oil as main fuel and diesel as backup.

Solution Europe & Africa

CG Solutions is ContourGlobal’s business unit that operates and owns inside-the-fence cogeneration facilities across several countries in Europe and Africa. CG Solutions focuses on developing highly efficient integrated energy solutions by implementing traditional cogeneration technology (i.e., combined heat and power) and, depending on the customer needs, combined with chillers, CO2 extraction systems and solar roof-top panels.

Our Head of Africa and Armenia

ARA HOVSEPYAN

Ara joined ContourGlobal in 2013, first as a lead negotiator for the acquisition of the Vorotan hydro cascade and then, later on, staying over as the General Manager for Armenia. He then moved on to become the Head of Africa and Armenia in 2021. In his current regional role, he oversees 633 MW of installed capacity across four African countries (Senegal, Togo, Rwanda and Nigeria), as well as ensures ContourGlobal’s presence in Asia through the major asset in Armenia.

Ara’s professional experience of almost 30 years is particularly relevant in energy infrastructure rehabilitation and management where he has been exposed to contractual and financial oversight for multimillion-dollar projects in various areas of international development. He excels in government and development agency relations, negotiations, and compliance during program implementation.

His background education is in political science and international diplomacy. He is a graduate of Oxford University (Exeter college) and a fellow of executive programs at the Harvard University Kennedy School.
