Underserved Markets

Electricity may not have reached the level of food, water and shelter as a basic necessity, but, from the lamp that allows a child to continue studying after dark to the cellphone charger that allows a village farmer to follow market prices, it has become a cornerstone of economic development.

In many markets, the lack of reliable electricity supplies forces consumers to turn to small generators and other high-cost options. We bring reliable, efficient electricity to such high-growth underserved markets, providing a new resource for economic development.

Reliable electricity also is required for local industry to grow. This was the challenge facing businesses in Kramatorsk, a city of 200,000 in the Eastern Ukraine. The 150 MW combined heat and power plant that had once powered local companies was running at only 25% of design capacity. In a joint venture, we repaired the facility, refurbished the steam turbines and rebuilt the cooling towers. This re-energized plant is now more reliable and efficient – and helping area manufacturers reach their own design capacity. Learn more.
