In many areas of the world, electric power is unavailable, scarce, or available only at prohibitive cost. These promising new markets are experiencing high growth rates as a result of pent-up demand for electricity following years of under-investment.
In the sub-Saharan African country of Togo, we have constructed and will operate an innovative 100 MW power generation plant capable of burning three types of fuel: natural gas, heavy fuel oil and diesel oil. This fuel switching capability provides Togo with a uniquely flexible source of secure electricity supply and will be able to operate even when its preferred fuel—natural gas supplied through the West Africa Gas Pipeline—is unavailable.
Our Togo project will reduce the country’s dependence on expensive diesel electricity and on hydroelectric power which is subject to weather patterns. We have done this while providing affordable electricity for the country since the plant produces electricity at a price much lower than the alternatives.
The project will promote the growth of businesses requiring reliable energy and was awarded Private Power Deal of the Year 2009 by Euromoney’s Project Finance magazine.

São Domingos is a city of approximately 12,000 people on the bank of the São Domingos River in the State of Goías in Brazil. ContourGlobal’s São Domingos II hydroelectric facility, a 25 MW run-of-river power plant, is bolstering economic development in this small, rural community and building new renewable electricity generation capacity to feed Brazil’s growing demand for power.
Hydroelectric plants, like São Domingos II, provide reliable power with lower environmental impact than reservoir based systems. As a result of our local presence, we have identified an additional three sites within the same river basin at which we will begin construction in 2010.
