Brazil has a large potential for wind power. The areas with the most potential are the northeast and the southeast coast. Wind power provides necessary diversification in a country that generates more than 90% of its electric power from hydro plants. However, most of the wind power in the country has been undeveloped due to an inadequate tariff scheme. The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy is currently exploring the design of a wind specific tariff that would promote development of these types of projects.
ContourGlobal decided to take advantage of this opportunity and is currently developing a 127.5 MW wind project in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, located in the southeast coast. With the development of these wind farms, ContourGlobal will increase its footprint in Brazil to continue growing its renewable-based energy portfolio in the country.
